Rock the Vote Democracy Day

As we embark on the 2012 presidential election, the country is abuzz with politics and debates around the issues that define us. With so much is at stake, there is no better time to engage your students in a nonpartisan discussion about the power and importance of exercising their right to vote in elections.

Every day nearly 12,000 young people turn 18 years old, and unfortunately there is no systematic way in this country to register them to vote and educate them about the political process.

Rock the Vote’s Democracy Class is a FREE, fun lesson plan that uses music and pop culture to open a discussion with your students about the history of voting rights, the connection between local issues they care about and those they elect and to walk them through the voter registration process and voting. Sign up now to bring Rock the Vote’s Democracy Class to your students.

On March 23rd we’ll kick off Democracy Day by hosting Democracy Classes around the country and spotlighting schools that participate. Sign up now and tell us when you are teaching the class and we’ll randomly choose a few lucky schools to host a ROCK THE VOTE PEP RALLY. We’ll bring one of our artist supporters, a local elected official and plenty of buttons, stickers, t-shirts and voter registration forms to help celebrate your participation! (Valid March 23, 2012- June 30, 20012)

Democracy class is a nonpartisan program geared towards 11th and 12th grade students. The 45-minute lesson plan uses music, pop culture, video, classroom discussion and a mock election to teach young people the skills to navigate the elections process and engage as active citizens. By signing up, you’ll receive a toolkit of materials including the Democracy Class lesson plan, a video on the history of voting, and additional materials to make Democracy Class a day that your students never forget. You can also download a full set of materials here.

Twenty-one years ago, Rock the Vote was founded to strengthen our country’s democracy by making politics relevant to young Americans, providing a simple entree into the process through registering them to vote. It’s within this spirit that we launched Democracy Class, helping to expand our electorate and provide the tools for schools and educators to engage their student body in the political process.
